The coins are sculptural in appearance and are considered by many to be the most beautiful regular issue gold coin ever produced. \r\n\r\nUnfortunately, the design was also impractical and redesigned by Charles Barber later in the year. The date is given in Roman numerals (the coins nickname by some) and lacks the Motto, IN GOD WE TRUST. President Roosevelt believed that money could easily be used for ungodly pursuits such as gambling and thus the name of the Lord should not be used on coinage. \r\n\r\nThe 1907 High Relief is categorized by most as either Wire Rim or Flat Rim. The coins are identical except for raised metal around the rims. This is probably the result of some tinkering by the Mint while they struggled to produce coins with such extreme relief. \r\n\r\nAround the late 1960s or early 1970s experts began to describe certain 1907 High Relief Double Eagles as Proof. These coins are certainly different, but not exactly like the latter Proof Double Eagles of the series. There are no mintage figures and the origins of the coins are a mystery. The coins have deep swirling die lines and exhibit a satiny surface similar to the Roman finish Proof gold coins. A fairly large number exist and it is my opinion that they are the result of experimentation with the new design by Mint employees. \r\n\r\nMany, if not the great majority of the original mintage was saved when the 1907 High Reliefs were issued. Thousands still exist and most seen are in some form of Mint State. Gem examples can easily be purchased if budget permits. A few nearly flawless examples are known. Washington was one of the leading figures in the charge to educate freed slaves during the reconstruction era. Being a free slave himself, he believed that the key to African Americans’ future success was through learning practical skills. Though his emphasis on manual skills as the ticket to advancement for his race drew criticism from those favoring a more balanced education for African Americans, it’s evident that his approach was perhaps better suited to the American social climate of its time. But Booker T. Washington’s ceaseless, pioneering efforts helped to ease white America into a greater acceptance of their fellow Americans.\r\n\r\nDue to his place in American History, the Booker T. Washington Birthplace Memorial Commission looked to strike a commemorative coin in his honor. They hoped to raise funds for the purchase and maintenance of his birthplace in Franklin County, Virginia. They were successful, and legislation was passed on August 7th, 1946 authorizing the mintage of up to 5 million coins. There were no stipulations placed on date and mint, an oversight that the Commission took full advantage of over the course of the following years.\r\n\r\nThe Commission hired sculptor Charles Keck, creator of the Panama-Pacific gold dollar and Lynchburg half, to design the coin. He submitted his designs which were approved by the Mint. However, unbeknownst to him or the BTW Commission, African-American artist Isaac Scott Hathaway learned of the program and offered up his own designs for free. Not knowing all of the facts, the Commission of Fine Arts approved Hathaway’s models. These were to be the designs that were put on the coin, and Keck’s were not used.\r\n\r\nThe coin’s obverse features a three-quarter facing bust of Washington. Below this is his name BOOKER T. WASHINGTON, while above is the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, both arranged in peripheral arcs around the coin’s border. To the left of Washington’s portrait are the year of coining and the value HALF DOLLAR, while the Latin legend E PLURIBUS UNUM is placed to the right. The reverse features in large letters the inscription FROM SLAVE CABIN TO HALL OF FAME. Indeed, both are depicted, New York City’s Hall of Fame colonnade above, and a generic slave cabin below. Squeezed into the spaces at left and right of the cabin are IN GOD WE TRUST and FRANKLIN COUNTY VA, respectively. Below the cabin is yet another statutory motto, LIBERTY, flanked by small stars, while the words BOOKER T. WASHINGTON BIRTHPLACE MEMORIAL are arranged in an arc inside the upper periphery.\r\n\r\nFor the initial offering year of 1946, 200,000 sets were issued, and an additional 800,000 coins were minted in Philadelphia. While many of these coins were likely melted in 1951, no records were kept as to the quantity of each date and mint mark that were destroyed. Sales were abysmal, and many coins were either released into circulation or melted. Nevertheless, all three mints coined this type annually through 1951 in ever-diminishing quantities that went straight to speculators and those few collectors who stayed with the program each year. Only the 1950-S and 1951(P) coins had significantly larger mintages, around half a million each, but again these coins were mostly returned to the Mint in later years for melting. All Booker T. He left his life of privilege in France to help the American colonies fight their British overlords and in the process helped create and sculpt the fledgling country. With the help of Benjamin Franklin, Lafayette eventually reached the rank of Major General in the Continental Army and helped broker a peace treaty between France and the colonies in 1778. He also had a very close relationship with Commander in Chief George Washington.\r\n\r\nWith all of this in mind, when the United States was invited to participate in the Paris Exposition of 1900, leaders thought a fitting contribution would be a statue of the Revolutionary War hero sculpted by Paul Wayland Bartlett. A novel and educational approach was used to raise funds for the statue: School children from all over the nation contributed small change to the Lafayette Monument Fund. Additional funds were to be procured through the striking of 50,000 Lafayette commemorative dollars to be sold at $2 each. Chief Engraver of the Mint, Charles E. Barber, was selected to design the coin.\r\n\r\nBarber’s obverse bears a striking resemblance to an 1881 Yorktown Centennial Medal. It depicts the conjoined busts of Washington and Lafayette. The portrait of Washington was created from the same bust used for the Washington Quarter 33 years later. In addition to the portraits, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs above the busts at the rim, and the inscription LAFAYETTE DOLLAR arcs at the border below. The reverse design depicts Bartlett’s statue of Lafayette on horseback. Bartlett’s name appears on the base of the statue. Encircling the border is the inscription ERECTED BY THE YOUTH OF THE UNITED STATES IN HONOR OF GEN LAFAYETTE PARIS 1900.\r\n\r\nWhile the date 1900 is on the reverse of the coin, they were actually all struck in 1899. On December 14th, 1899, the mint struck all 50,000 coins as authorized by the legislation. This date had special significance as it was 100 years to the day of Washington’s death. Unfortunately, the coins proved to be slow sellers. After the Exposition, they were still available for a number of years for less than issue price.
