Title
Illustration of the process of the Holy Blood to Westminster
Description
Fol. 216r, from Matthew Paris' Chronica maiora II.
This miniature shows Henry III of England carrying the Relic of the Holy Blood at Westminster Abbey in 1247. This relic of the blood of Christ was sent from the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Robert of Nantes, to King Henry, and was paraded through the streets of London before its eventual placement in Westminster. Despite Henry’s attempts to stir up pilgrimage interest in the relic, it did not gain any particular popularity.
