Title

The Castle of Chlemoutsi (or Clairmont), Achaea, the Peloponnese, Greece, 13th century

Description

Built between 1220/1230 by the Geoffrey I de Villehardouin, Chlemoutsi was the strongest fortress in the Frankish principality of Achaea, in the Peloponnese. Named Clermont by its founder and Chlemoutsi by the locals, the castle was known by the Venetians as Castel Tornese. Clermont or Chlemoutsi controlled the core of the Frankish possessions in Achaea, and protected Glarentza (modern day Kyllini), a key Frankish mint and port, and Andravida, the capital of the Principality of Achaea.
