Square pouch or bag constructed of skin and cloth, the front covered with a large panel of loomwoven glass imitation wampum, black ground, white details, with a strap also of imitation glass wampum. The bag face, of 26 horizontal rows of beads on 27 warps, has three white heaxagons at the bottom, and six white diamonds at the top. The sides of the bag are edged in orange quillwork in zig-zag line technique, followed by a row of imitation-wampum, five beads deep, three black in the middle and one at either end of white: these may have been woven on the bias and applied as a strip, or may be spot-stitched onto the bag. The bottom of bag is also edged with a row of imitation-wampum, on the bias, eight beads deep, white at the ends with six black beads in the middle. The top cloth edge of the bag above the panel was formerly decorated with a row of alternating black and white imitation-wampum beads, and 4 small crosses of four white and one black bead each, of which two on the right hand side survive.
The outer edge of the bag was originally decorated with rows of orange hair-filled metal cones, most of which are now missing, except at the bottom. The strap has six warps, for five rows of black imitation-wampum, with nine white diamonds evenly spaced along the length. The warps are of skin, and wefts perhaps of a native wool or vegetal fibre. A substantial number of beads are missing from the strap.</text>

The design consists of three rectangles, the one in the middle being 19 beads long and 18 wide, with a second rectangle inside, 8 long by 6 wide. The two end rectangles are 31 beads long, by 16 beads high at one end, and 33 beads long for the rectangle at the other end: the internal rectangles of are both 10 beads long, and 6 beads high. The ground is of purple beads, with the design in white. The uprights of the rectangles are two white beads wide, and the horizontal bars only one bead high. The bottoms and tops of the rectangles run along the edges of the belt. Since the middle rectangle has two more rows, this necessitates a reduction by two warps of the belt, between 7 and 27 wefts from the white rectangle in the centre. Whether this occured pre- or post-collection is uncertain. The peculiar shape of the belt is visible in the registration drawing. At both ends, three purple beads in, are white stripes, 5 rows wide at one end, and 6 rows wide at the other. The belt is 370 beads long.

<text>The “Money Map of Africa” compounds many of Smith’s ideas relating to money. The images and cultural symbols on the banknotes are significant and can give an indication of the economy of a given country. First world countries may show inventors, great architects, defining achievements, artists and historical figures, whereas a poorer economy may show its natural assets such as local flora and fauna, agricultural and local industries – Madagascar for example shows boats and fishermen, and The Congo shows tribal costumes and artefacts. Religious symbols may feature such as saints, holy buildings, religious leaders, whilst spiritual and cultural alliances can be seen as groups of countries appear to merge due to the similarity of Islamic design on the banknotes. One can also see economic alliances such as the West and Central African states, which share common currencies between a group of nations. Similarly, one can also see traces of old empires - some country’s borders are naturally formed by rivers or mountains, but other country’s borders are man-made – to an extent divided by money. Some states are literally drawn with a ruler and pencil, evidence of it being divided up as a consequence of its colonial past. There are of course geological maps, but this map is a political map showing political boundaries of each state. Over time, this map will date as new alliances are formed, or wars annex one country onto another, or there is a regime change and a new currency is issued. All the notes on this map are current issue.
